“From Scratch” revolves around the 1984 LP album, “Albanian Summer: An Entertainment.” Originally released by Practical Music in London, the album was composed by Dave Smith, a musician and member of the Scratch Orchestra, and performed by classical and improvisational musicians, Janet Sherbourne and Jan Steele. Drawing on interviews, archival materials and difficult-to-find essays, the publication discusses the interest in socialist Albania that was held by experimental musicians in the UK. It includes new interviews with Dave Smith and Jan Steele, as well as three essays by Smith on Albanian music and culture, and an essay by Gavin Bryars on Smith’s music.
